Richards was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and raised as a Quaker. His birthdate was March 18, but his birth year is uncertain. The Omaha Herald reported that Richards said he was born in 1836, but the New York Times reported that he was 24 years old when apprehended in December 1878, indicating that he was born around 1854. Richards’ statements that he was a child during the Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, and that he was between 16 and 18 in September 1871, when his mother died, corroborate an 1850s birthdate.(Source – Wikipedia)
